Meet Your Board: Lauren Moyer, President
Why costuming? What brought you here?
I have been obsessed with historical costumes since I was little and had American Girl dolls and Tom Tierney paper dolls. I would draw them and make stories around the characters. That’s what got me interested in costuming. My mother also studied sewing and I’ve been sewing since I can remember. I didn’t know much about the costuming world outside of cosplay and Renaissance Fairs until the past few years when I was introduced to the costumed events in the Bay Area.
What’s your costuming focus?
I’m still new so I have no one focus. I have made the most of 18th century dress, but am excited to explore more periods.
Do you do anything else crafty or artistic?
I’m lucky to work in the arts field. I also paint and draw, and do any crafty thing I like on Pinterest. I’m currently very interested in reincorporating old handicrafts into my crafting routines and try to make everything from scratch if possible.
What’s your day job?
I am a Senior UI/UX Designer in the education and science technology fields.
What was the first costume you made? Is there a picture?
The first costume I made was a Medieval style dress I made for a Shakespeare festival in 5th grade. I knew nothing about patterns and body shaped so I sewed a rectangle of fabric in a tube to make it “fitted” and added triangles to the bottom like godets. It fit me so badly and I didn’t want to wear it out because I was self conscious, my mom however was so proud she made me wear it.
What’s on the sewing table now?
I recently bought hand blocked print cotton fabric while I was in India, so something with that.
What was your first/most memorable costuming disaster/ learning moment?
I guess my first costume, a tube of fabric with no stretch did not mean it would fit 🙂
Costume you’re most proud of?
I’m most proud of my first 18th century dress, it’s an orange zone front gown with silk folded into triangles for the trim. It was my first fully realized me made costume and I’m very proud with how it turned out.
What’s your holy grail costuming project? The one you dream of doing?
A Spanish guardinfante, there not much information on the construction so I see it as a fun experiment.
What’s your costuming Kryptonite, the one thing that ALWAYS gives you trouble?
Reading through the directions first! “I’ll figure it out”… cut cut cut… oops!
Tell us one (or two or three) things about you that others might not know.
I have a very green thumb, I tend garden, grow food and have lots of indoor plants. I’ve been fortunate to live in 4 states and also in Brazil while in High School!
