Nectar and Ambrosia: Day with Dionysus on Mount Olympus
Event Review by Christopher Erickson

The most recent wine tasting event that the GBACG hosted was a Greco-Roman themed gathering held at the lovely GV Cellars in Fairfield, California, on Saturday, August 10, 2019. The event was well attended.
The event space was a porch outside the winery with a view of the Green Valley vineyard fields and mountain ranges in the background. Select varieties of wines were available for tasting including red, sparkling, rose and white. Attendees were able to sample the wines throughout the afternoon. The event featured a catered lunch with a selection of Mediterranean foods including shawarma, hummus, baba ghanoush, dolma and pita bread.
Entertainment was provided via three Olympic-themed games. One was a pseudo chariot race where participants had to toss a stuffed horse tied to their wrists while racing around an oval track. The second event was a discus throw similar to ultimate frisbee. The final game was a wrestling tournament—thumb wrestling that is. There was also a costume showcase where the audience got to decide the winners in various randomly selected categories such as best Amazon-made (purchased) outfit and best traditional methods. GBACG President Frances Lopez handed out laurel wreaths to the victors of the games and the costume contest.
As for the costumes, besides traditional togas, several people created elaborate head dresses or props to portray gods, goddesses, monsters and mythical creatures. Several people took the opportunity with the scenery to get wonderful action shots. Many of the regular patrons at the winery enjoyed seeing our costumed participants and asked to take photos of us.
It was a fun and relaxing day outdoors with our fellow costumers enjoying good food, wine and company.
