You are creating an exact replica of an original garment, and hand sewing is recommended (but it can be assembled using a machine, too). I enjoyed the history included in the pattern, and it has directions for a cravat. Even with careful measuring, I found that the collar and neckline ran small, so plan ahead for that possibility.
