SUMMARY:Fake it Til You Make it - 1920s Hairstyles for Every Length
DESCRIPTION:Not ready for the big chop? Don’t want to grow out your pixie cut? You can still wear 1920s hair! In this class students will learn period correct ways to style 1920s long hair\, as well as some make-ahead hairpieces\, to create fail-proof quick styles for any length of hair. \nThe class will consist of two parts: \nThe first portion will cover three period styling options of longer hair: The “earphones”\, the chignon\, and the psyche knot. \nThe second portion will be two simple make-ahead frontal hairpieces designed to be worn with either a hat or a headband to give an illusion of period hair: A sleek orchid bob and a classic finger wave. \nOther styles may be demonstrated if time permits. \nYou may choose to work on one or both portions of the class.

SUMMARY:Geologist and Naturalist Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join the great Lady-Geologists of the early Victorian era to do some digging and nature watching! \nListen to a Historical and Scientific Lecture by Mary Anning Herself \nMiss Mary Anning would like to share her latest discoveries with you. Come hear about what it’s like to be a working woman combing the cliffs and beaches of Lyme Regis to find fossils from the Jurassic age. From Verteberries (vertebrae of ichthyosaurs) to Snakestones (ancient ammonites) to Devils Toenails I will show you beautiful evidence of extinct life forms that will cause you to question what you think you know about life on earth. Be prepared to challenge your religious teachings! \nMore info about Mary \nDig for Fossils \nThere will be fossil kits available so you can truly feel the sense of discovery and take your new ancient friend home! \nHave Your Picture Taken in Tintype \nConsider having your tintype portrait taken at this event! Tintypes were the standard photo process in the mid-19th century. The tintype or “wet plate” process is well known for capturing images during the American Civil War. Photos are handmade directly on metal plates using a large format view camera. Silver Reaction Media will be set up at the event to make tintype photos in several sizes. The exposure for a tintype image is a few seconds\, so having no more than two people in a photo is preferable to help ensure a sharp image. Tintype images are varnished and will last into the next century\, just as the ones from two centuries ago have. \nExamples of past work \nSign up for the spot here\, and pay at the event \nRefreshments \nPack your picnic lunch and cutlery\, we will have water\, tea\, lemonade\, and cups available. \nCostume \nVictorian / naturalist / scientist / steampunk

SUMMARY:Barbie's Mojo Dojo Casa Purse
DESCRIPTION:Fabulous and versatile\, rigid-bodied box purses were popular in Barbie’s early years.  Mid-century vintage box purses were often made from lucite (acrylic)\, wood\, wicker\, or metal.  The variety and combination of materials were dizzying compared to today.  In this class\, we will use contemporary materials to recreate a specific type of faux-basket purse popular in the 1950’s-60’s.  Unlike purses made entirely of acrylic\, this type of purse mimics a basket but closes with an acrylic lid.  In vintage examples\, the lids are generally white with painted decorations in a limited color palette.  Novelty patterns such as travel\, nature\, animals\, and rococo revival were popular.  Surface decorations often included flat back rhinestones and plastic floral or faux-pearl cabochons typically found in costume jewelry of the era.

SUMMARY:Looking Fan-cy: An 1840s fan-front bodice (Two-Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:(Please note that this workshop is in two sessions: April 28th and May 5th. The hours are both 10am-5pm. There will be a lunch break in each session.) \nDo you look at images of Victorian ladies and wish you could dress just like them? Now you can! Come make an early Victorian bodice from the 1840s\, with the typical fan-shaped pleating at the front. You can wear it to Victorian balls\, teas\, Dickens Fair\, SASS events\, or any occasion you desire. It’s perfect for lady scientists or Gothic Bronte heroines. You can even use it as a base for a modern or fantasy gown! For inspiration\, please visit my Pinterest board at https://www.pinterest.com/cjscholar/fan-front-1840s/. \nWe’ll start with a historically accurate bodice pattern\, and augment it with authentic 19th century dressmaking techniques to make a custom gown just for you. We’ll cover measurements\, pattern adjustments\, fitting\, period sewing techniques\, trimming\, boning\, hand finishing\, making skirts without a pattern\, and much more. \n\nIn the first session (April 28)\, you will cover a brief overview of the styles worn in the era. You will take measurements\, trace off the correct pattern pieces\, and then make and fit mock-ups.\nIn the second session (May 5)\, you will then move on to cutting and constructing your bodice and adding boning. We’ll finish out by concentrating on closures and facings\, and cover skirts if time.

SUMMARY:The Tudors @ Legion of Honor
DESCRIPTION:***Date Change for Goes to The Tudors*** \nGBACG has been invited by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco to participate in their costume days for the Tudors exhibit at The Legion of Honor. They are hosting two Tudor costume days on July 1st and August 26th\, when all participants who show up in Tudor-era costume dress receive a 50% discount to the exhibition. \nAfter some discussion\, the board has decided to move our July 9th Goes to Tudors to the August 26th date to allow our membership to take advantage of this discount. This date also gives everyone more time to work on their outfits\, and more time to adjust their existing plans. We are excited for our members to receive this discount and participate in not only our Goes to but also the Museum costume days. \nSince this is short notice\, we have asked the museum to allow any member who has already bought a ticket for July 9th to request a refund (*instructions on the GBACG FB page) so that they can purchase a ticket in person and in costume on August 26th at 50% off. \nWe understand this change is not ideal; the board always strives to give ample notice on event dates to membership. We hope to be able to continue to collaborate on these costume days in the future with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco for our membership to enjoy. We encourage members who were planning on going to the July 9th date and cannot make the August date to meet up and enjoy the exhibit together. \nWe hope that you will be able to join us on the new date\, August 26th at 11am at the Legion of Honor. \nPlease purchase your own tickets for the museum and the exhibit\, and meet us in the lobby at 11 am. \nThis is a primarily educational and social event. Attending  in costume\, whether historical or modern\, is completely optional\, and you’re free to come as you are.
