Soiree au Moulin Rouge!
Saturday, October 15, 2016
8:00 PM - Midnight
Michaan's Theater, Alameda, CA
New and Improved! We are delighted to announce that this event has been moved to Michaan's stunning refurbished theater on the Alameda Naval Base!
Travel back in time to the elegance and decadence of fin-de-siecle Paris! Join us in a stunning refurbished theater as we recreate the most famous nightclub of all time, the Moulin Rouge, for an evening of revelry and elegance, including dancing to Lee Presson and the Nails. We will also present a fabulous floor show headlined by Le Cancan Bijou, a tantalizing and forbidden fan dance by Miss Ariyana LaFey, music, dance performances, and many others! Come dance the night away in the City of Light as we celebrate freedom, beauty, truth, and love... Come What May.
The Moulin Rouge welcomes everyone!
Who will you be for the evening: an aristrocratic patron? A cancan dancer or performer? An artist starving in a garret in Montmartre? Requested costume is 1890-1910, all classes and occupations. Cancan or theatrical costumes, fancy dress, steampunk and movie-inspired outfits are all welcome. Costumes are required, but as always do not have to be perfect period or movie replicas. Enjoyment and effort are what matter!
GBACG Costume Guidelines
- American Duchess has a number of ladies' shoe styles appropriate for this period.
- Laughing Moon Mercantile has patterns for ladies and gentlemen, including a Can-Can Dancer costume.
- Truly Victorian has wonderful late Victorian and Edwardian patterns, including a cancan skirt.
- Costumer's Guide has a wonderful page on costumes from Baz Luhrman's movie.
- A brief article about the costumes used at the actual Moulin Rouge.
- Gentleman's Emporium carries men's and ladies' outfits and accessories.
A standard ticket allows you to find a spot in the cozy theater loge seats... or you can skip a seat and tear up the dance floor all night. However, if you prefer a bit more luxury—get a ticket with reserved seating in the front row or at a premier table by the dance floor!
Meet the muse of so many bohemian artists and writers: the green fairy Absinthe. The tasting features 6 different absinthes in a variety of styles including local absinthes by St. George Distillery from Alameda and La Sorciere from Belmont, as well as Swiss and other American varieties. Learn this history of this once banned herbal liquor and enjoy the social ceremony of the absinthe 'louche', led by Tea & Absinthe, purveyors of loose leaf tea and absinthe accessories. Tastings are $20 in advance ($25 at the door).
Please be sure to dine before the event. Water and lemonade will be served. There will be a no-host bar and a no-host dessert crepe stand, just like on the streets of Paris. Bring cash if you plan to visit either.
This is an adults only event.
Must be 18+ to attend.
